"The Mission" is perhaps not the best ever Styx record, depending on one's tastes and what "era" of Styx captures one's fancy. Here we have the band diving into their more prog-oriented side - not for the first time mind you - and telling the story of a mission to Mars from the perspective of the astronauts. At least, that's what I got from it. There are no bad songs on this record and the performances are full of high-caliber musicianship and top production standards, as one would expect. The songwriting is where fans are going to differ. If you're not much into the proggy side of Styx, or don't like the kind of tale they're telling here, or if you simply miss Dennis DeYoung -- this might not be your album. But it's a pretty good record, really. It's more than worth the price here. There's some good rockin', some really nice piano in Khedive, and it's a cohesive effort. I like it fine.
I bought the CD for this when I seen them in concert a few years back. I love this album and listen to it over and over until I wore the CD out. Now buying it in digital for my phone. Classic Styx with incredible song writing from the whole group. You will not be sorry you bought this album.
styx has been my favorite band since i was in high school.since john died and dennis has left, the band is better off playing the old hits.listening to these promo/samples on this ''missions'',i can say that ''in my opinion''...good or bad, ''dennis should be very thankful he is not tied to this CD/album''. it does not live up to the high quality of music styx is noted for.***as a note,i wont go to see a tour that promotes this.
